The History Of The University Of Florida

The University of Florida traces its origins to 1853, when the East Florida Seminary, the oldest of the four University of Florida predecessor institutions that eventually merged to create it in 1905, was founded in Ocala, very different city which time (Wikipedia). The seminary, which has transitioned through several incarnations over the years at different locations across Florida before merging with the Florida Agricultural College in Lake City to create UF in 1905. The college later moved to Gainesville in 1906 and today it is the second largest university in the nation.

One of the more important events in university history occurred when it became a land-grant university in accordance with Mollin Act from 1862 which gave federal funds to universities for focus on agriculture and mechanical arts.
