A Brief History of the University of Maryland
Maryland Agricultural College was to become the University of Maryland. It evolved into a major research university, adding academic programs and resources over the decades. The Morrill Land-Grant Act of 1862 brought heavy development to the university, and therefore helped make it to be designated as a land-grant institution, which would shape agriculture, science, and engineering at Maryland.
The campus has overcome several challenges, such as a major fire in 1912 and suffered financial difficulties in The Great Depression. But it had its hiccups, though the bumps and bruises never kept it down. The institution was officially incorporated into the University of Maryland system in 1920, becoming a prominent part of Maryland’s overall educational reach.
The university was reorganized as the University System of Maryland in 1988… One (Campus) to Rule Them All, University of Maryland College Park as its flagship — when most people even speak today of UMCP it’s hardly mentioned that this once was a campus and other institutions were on par economically.
