History of the University of Houston

Founded in 1927, the University of Houston started as Houston Junior College (HJC). At openning, it was simply offering night classes to support the scholastic needs of a large number of working adults in by then industrial center. The university established under the leadership of its first president, Edison Ellsworth Oberholtzer. The name was changed in 1934 to the University of Houston.

Over the following decades, UH increased its academic programs, research capacity, and campus presence. In 1963, it became a state university, joining the Texas State University System. As the years went by the university expanded and eventually achieved independent status as an institution in its own right under the University of Houston System which at that time consisted of four universities and numerous other teaching facilities.
